  • Published: March 2, 2018

In 2015, there were more than 385,000 auto accidents on Georgia roadways, including 1,430 fatalities and 19,405 serious injuries. Since 2015, the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety have been working diligently to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on roadways across the state. Unfortunately, the number of fatal accidents has only increased over the past two years.

Statistics About Fatal Auto Accidents

2016 was considered the deadliest year on U.S. roadways since 2007, with more than 40,000 people dying in fatal auto accidents. Since 2015, the number of fatal auto accidents on Georgia roadways increased by 33 percent. That accounts for 1,561 fatalities in 2016 and 1,547 in 2017. The Georgia DOT provided the following information about those accidents:

  •  74 percent of fatalities were caused by driver behavior, including:
    ○ Distracted driving
    ○ Alcohol- or drug-impaired driving
    ○ Driving too fast
  • 60 percent of fatalities were caused by a driver failing to maintain his or her lane.
  • 51 percent of fatalities involved a single vehicle striking an object, such as a tree or bridge.
  • 43 percent of fatalities were among individuals not wearing a seatbelt.
  • 16 percent of fatal accidents involved pedestrians – a 40 percent increase over two years.
  • 10 percent of fatal accidents involved large/commercial trucks.
What You Can Do

The Georgia DOT and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety recommend that Georgia drivers do the following to reduce the risk of a serious auto accident:

  • Avoid distractions while driving. Refrain from using mobile devices, GPS units, or other distractions while driving.
  • Do not drive after consuming any amount of alcohol or drugs.
  • Always obey the speed limit.
  • Be alert to roadway conditions and hazards.
  • Always wear your seatbelt.
  • Take responsibility for yourself, your passengers, and others along the roadway.
